Midvale, Utah
Arranging aftercare for exotic and wild animals in Midvale
For owners who board large animals outside the city, distance and weather can complicate a sudden death. Leave the barn a signed note saying who can approve euthanasia, which hauler to phone, and whether the animal should be held for a private cremation. Decisions can then be made promptly in the middle of the night, even if you cannot reach the barn before morning.
Midvale is densely built, and horses or livestock inside city limits are rare. Residents who own a large animal generally board it on the valley's rural fringes or on ranch land in neighboring counties. Aftercare is organized at the boarding address, so ask the stable or ranch which vet and hauler it relies on, and write those numbers down before any emergency.
Many general-practice vets around Midvale don't treat exotic species, so the person who confirms a death, performs euthanasia or takes necropsy samples may be an hour or more away. If you keep exotic animals, agree a plan with an exotic-animal vet before an emergency, including who handles after-hours calls. Ask too about the euthanasia drugs they use, because that can affect whether burial, rendering or composting is allowed afterwards.
Midvale's population is around 36,099, the 30th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 10 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Midvale run from there.
Midvale sits within easy reach of Murray (3 miles), Sandy (4 miles, a larger centre) and Cottonwood Heights (4 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Midvale; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

How Utah thinks about cremation, and what that means for your animals
Cremation of people runs at about 46.1%[1] in Utah, and the closest crematory able to take a big or unusual animal may sit across a state, provincial or regional border. That's usually legal, but disease rules can apply to remains that travel, especially for deer, elk and birds. Check with your vet or wildlife agency before booking a provider on the other side.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Utah figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Midvale tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather in Midvale sets the clock
Equipment that sits idle half the year fails when it's needed. In a place with Midvale's swings, test coolers and freezers before July and check generators, heaters and trailer tires before the first freeze. A cooler that can't hold temperature in a heat wave, or a trailer with a flat on an icy morning, turns a hard day into a much longer one.
Many institutions in places with seasons like Midvale's combine routes by time of year: cremation or lab disposal through the hot months, when speed matters, and a planned burial of ashes or a memorial planting once the ground softens in spring. Staff often find a spring gathering easier to attend than one held in the rush after a death.

Price benchmarks for a quote in Midvale
Cremation isn't the only line on the invoice. Necropsy fees, courier costs for chilled samples, heavy-lift hire and after-hours callouts can together rival the cremation itself. For routes that don't return ashes, by our estimate composting runs about 23 cents a pound [4] and lab digestion about 25 cents a pound. Our written-quote comparison guide shows how to line up quotes from Midvale providers.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Legal limits worth checking in Utah
For zoo and wildlife animals, rules come from several directions at once: disposal deadlines written for livestock, disease rules that follow outbreaks rather than borders, wildlife permits and, for accredited institutions, their own standards. The notes below cover what usually applies in Utah. Species under federal or international protection add their own conditions, which your compliance lead should own.

From enclosure to certificate, step by step
- Tell the staff and volunteers first, in person or by phone, before any public post.
- Decide what to say to school groups and regular visitors, thinking especially of the children who knew the animal.
- Choose individual cremation when the center would like ashes for a memorial, and record that choice on any lab paperwork.
- Keep a few mementos, perhaps a molted skin, a shed feather or an enrichment toy the animal loved, if the vet is happy for you to.
- Update the education program to make sure the next group isn't expecting to meet an animal that has died.
- Plan a small memorial for when the ashes come back, with the people who worked with the animal most.
Memorials, keepsakes and staff grief
Private cremation of a horse, llama or big pig is offered at only a handful of places in Utah, with prices that rise by weight and by distance traveled. Many Midvale owners opt for shared cremation or rendering to keep costs manageable. Snipping a hank of mane or tail beforehand, or keeping the halter and a shoe, preserves a memento in any case.

Questions people ask
Does the Midvale climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Where are the providers that serve Midvale actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 10 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Midvale and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Midvale?
Usually yes. Murray is about 3 miles away, Sandy is about 4 miles away and Cottonwood Heights is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Utah attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Utah human cremation rate at about 46.1%[1]. We show it on the Midvale page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How long can a large animal wait before cremation in the Midvale heat?
Not long. A big body holds heat internally for many hours, and in Midvale's hottest weeks tissues break down fast enough to spoil a necropsy. Aim for a cooler or refrigerated trailer within a couple of hours, and same-day transport if cold storage isn't available. Agree summer pickup terms with your provider in advance.
Can a zoo animal be cremated after a necropsy?
Yes, and it's common. The remains may be incomplete because tissues are kept for histology, and some institutions retain the skeleton or skin for collections. Tell the lab before the necropsy that you want ashes returned, and put it on the submission form, so the remains are released to a crematory rather than disposed of at the lab.
