Rules in the Netherlands that can decide the route for you
An inspector's question after a death is usually simple: show me where this animal went. Keep the death record, necropsy report, custody signatures and the provider's certificate together, filed by animal ID, for as long as your license or permit requires. The disposal rules for the Netherlands below set the legal minimum; your records prove you met it.
In the Netherlands, larger dead animals are usually collected by the national rendering service under animal by-products rules, and pet crematoria handle smaller species. Individual cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Ask your provider in writing which one you're booking and what certificate you'll receive for your records.
When an animal in your care dies: step by step
- Activate the written protocol and put one person in charge of coordinating the day.
- Confirm with the pathologist the time and place of the necropsy, and the way the remains get handed back once it's done.
- Move the body out of public view along the pre-agreed route, before the gates open if at all possible.
- Record each hand-off from enclosure to cooler to lab to crematory, with times and signatures.
- Brief the communications lead with what can be said now and what waits for results.
- Plan the staff gathering and let the keepers decide how they want the animal remembered.
- Review the case afterwards and revise the protocol while everything's still clear.
Memorials, keepsakes and staff grief
Keepsakes taken during or after necropsy, with the pathologist's agreement, can mean a lot to staff: a footprint cast, a shed feather or a photograph of the keeper team with the animal. Ask before the necropsy starts; after cremation, only ashes remain.

How should a sanctuary in the Netherlands plan the euthanasia of a large resident?
Book the vet, the provider and any lifting equipment for the same morning, confirm the euthanasia drug so the disposal route fits and prepare firm, screened ground where a vehicle can reach. Give the caregivers time to say goodbye, and settle beforehand whether the team wants ashes.
Can we get ashes back after a lab necropsy in the Netherlands?
