Utrecht, Netherlands
Arranging aftercare for exotic and wild animals in Utrecht
In the Netherlands, dead farm animals go through the national fallen-stock collection system, while a horse or pony can also be cremated individually with the ashes returned. Horse cremation is available in the Netherlands but from few places, so start asking early. Have the horse's passport to hand, as providers usually need it, and ask for the full cost, including transport, in writing.
Utrecht is ringed by classic Dutch countryside, with dairy farms on the flat polders to the west and south, and horses grazing in paddocks and stabled at riding schools across the province. The Netherlands has a strong equestrian culture, and many families keep a horse or pony at livery. Collection is arranged at the stable or farm, so have that address and the access route ready.
Sanctuaries on the edge of Utrecht, whether farm-animal, big cat, primate or equine, face the widest range of sizes. The same week can bring a chicken and a draft horse. Many have land for burial and use it where rules allow, but burial of a heavy animal needs equipment, setbacks from wells and water and, if the animal was euthanized, deep cover to protect scavenging wildlife. Cremation, even of a portion, is often chosen for residents the volunteers knew best.
With roughly 357,000 residents, Utrecht is one of the Netherlands communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Utrecht are based about 21 miles away in Amsterdam, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Amsterdam (21 miles, a larger centre), Haarlem (29 miles) and Rotterdam (30 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
68.37%[1]
In 2023, 68.37% of deaths in the Netherlands were cremated (108 crematoria).
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation culture in Netherlands and its effect on local capacity
About 68.37%[1] of people in Netherlands are cremated, a share that has been rising for years. Pet cremation has grown alongside it, so providers for small and mid-size animals are reasonably easy to find. Large-animal options have grown more slowly. Sanctuaries and rehabbers here often use a mix: cremation for animals the team was close to, lab disposal or burial for the rest.
The Netherlands figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
How the seasons in Utrecht change aftercare logistics
Whatever the local climate, cold storage fails in the same ways: a power cut, a door left ajar or a freezer too full to close. A max-min thermometer in each unit, a weekly check on a log sheet and a backup site you've already asked about cover most of it. They cost little and protect the necropsy cases that matter most.

Per-job pricing for Utrecht institutions and keepers
Across Europe, published pet cremation prices give a benchmark for small and mid-size collection animals: a German guide lists individual cremation at €165 to €375 [4]. Zoo hoofstock and very large animals are usually handled under animal by-products rules through approved collectors, and quoted per job.
The full price table by size is on our Netherlands page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Rules in Netherlands that can decide the route for you
Rules about remains assume someone has the right to decide what happens to them. For animals on loan, on a breeding agreement or held under a government permit, that may not be you. Check the loan or permit terms before choosing a route, then look at the general rules for Netherlands below. The owning institution or agency may want the necropsy report, tissues or the whole body.
In the Netherlands, larger dead animals are usually collected by the national rendering service under animal by-products rules, and pet crematoria handle smaller species. Individual cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Ask your provider in writing which one you're booking and what certificate you'll receive for your records.
A practical sequence for keepers, vets and rehabbers
- Stop all animal movements in and out of the affected area as soon as you see several deaths.
- Call your vet and describe the pattern: species, numbers, timing and any signs before death.
- Isolate and chill the bodies separately, each bagged and labeled, with a note of where it was found.
- Let the vet choose which animals go for necropsy; a handful of representative cases is usually all that's needed.
- Report to the animal health authority whenever the vet thinks something notifiable is possible.
- Use the approved disposal route for the rest, and log every animal individually even if they're cremated together.
Keeping an animal's story alive
Wet Dutch winters can leave polder pastures too soft for a heavy vehicle, and the narrow dike roads around Utrecht can be hard for a large truck to turn on. If you keep an older horse or pony, think about a spot on firm paving near the stable where it could be reached, and ask providers what lifting equipment they bring and whether a smaller vehicle is available.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Utrecht actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Amsterdam, about 21 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Utrecht and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Utrecht?
Usually yes. Amsterdam is about 21 miles away, Haarlem is about 29 miles away and Rotterdam is about 30 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Netherlands?
For people, yes: about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Utrecht follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is there a diagnostic lab that serves Utrecht?
Most regions are served by a state, university or veterinary-school diagnostic lab, though it may be some distance from Utrecht. Ask which one covers your area, whether they take intact carcasses or only samples, how submissions should be packed and chilled and whether they'll release remains to a crematory afterwards.
Can several small animals be cremated together and still be tracked?
Yes, as long as you log them individually before they go. Communal cremation means the ashes are mixed and not returned, but your records can still list every animal by intake number, species, date and route. Ask the provider for a manifest that matches your list, and flag any animal that needs individual cremation so it's kept apart.
Can we be present for the cremation?
Some providers allow keepers or staff to attend the start of a cremation, and for a long-term resident it can mean a lot. It usually needs booking ahead and may cost more. Large-animal providers near Utrecht vary widely in what they allow, so ask on the first call rather than assuming.
