Zoo & Wildlife Cremation in Sweden: what to know
Prices in Sweden follow weight and service more than species. Small collection animals are priced much like household pets; the biggest get a bespoke quote, with collection, handling and any testing added. The table on this page shows published figures; use them to check the quotes you receive in local currency.
In Sweden, smaller collection animals, from birds and reptiles to mid-size mammals, can usually go to a pet crematorium. Hoofstock and very large animals are often handled through approved collectors, incinerators or labs under animal by-products or disease rules. Knowing which applies to each species before a death saves time and money.

Local attitudes to cremation and memorials
Because about 84.69%[1] of people in Sweden choose cremation, pet crematories here face real competition, and many of them will negotiate for regular institutional work. Use that. Ask two or three for a written schedule by weight, a price for communal loads from a rehab center and a firm answer on the largest animal they can take. Some also offer aquamation, a water-based alternative, which is worth asking about if your board cares about emissions.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Sweden rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Budgeting aftercare for large and exotic animals in Sweden
The gap between collective and individual cremation is steep for mid-size animals. In France, a 20 kg animal is listed at €70 to €120 collective against €150 to €250 individual [2]. Rehab centers and wildlife hospitals in Sweden can keep costs down by using collective cremation for routine cases and paying for individual cremation only where ashes are wanted.
In several European countries, collection of larger dead animals by the approved rendering service is partly publicly funded or charged at a set fee, while private cremation is priced freely. Ask your national veterinary authority what the approved route costs for your species before comparing it with a private crematorium's quote. Prices vary by country and region.
| Country | Collective | Individual |
|---|---|---|
| Germany (all sizes) | €85 to €205 | €165 to €375 |
| France (50 kg) | €130 to €180 | €300 to €400 |
| Norway (51 to 90 kg) | NOK 1,895 | NOK 4,990 |
| Hoofstock, very large animals | Approved collectors | Quoted per job |

Who sets the rules for animal remains in Sweden
Public health officials can have a say too. When a rabies-vector species dies after contact with people, or a zoonotic disease is suspected, the local health department may need the body before any aftercare happens. Wildlife and agriculture rules for Sweden are summarized below; add your health department's number to your protocol alongside them.
A checklist for the next few hours
- Call the attending vet or pathologist first, and keep everyone away from the body until they've answered. It's their call whether a necropsy happens, which samples get taken and whether something reportable might be involved.
- Start the record now: the animal's ID and species, when it died, who discovered it and who carried it. From this point on, each hand-off needs a signed name.
- Get the body cold in a cooler or refrigerated trailer. Don't freeze it unless the vet says samples aren't needed.
- Give keepers a few minutes with the animal if they want it, before pathology takes over.
- Confirm the route in writing: lab disposal, individual cremation with ashes returned, digestion or burial. Put the ashes request on the lab submission form if it applies.
- Book transport and any heavy-lift equipment, with the route out of the habitat agreed in advance.
- File the certificate under the animal's ID, and record whether any tissues or the skeleton were kept.
Honoring an animal in Sweden
Sanctuaries often mark a resident's death with the people who cared for them: a small gathering at the resident's favorite spot, a tree planted over ashes or a marker by the barn. For supporters, a short story about the animal's life, shared with care, can turn grief into gratitude. Our guide to staff and donor-facing remembrances has formats that work.

Questions people ask
How should a sanctuary in Sweden plan the euthanasia of a large resident?
Book the vet, the provider and any lifting equipment for the same morning, confirm the euthanasia drug so the disposal route fits and prepare firm, screened ground where a vehicle can reach. Give the caregivers time to say goodbye, and settle beforehand whether the team wants ashes.
Can we get ashes back after a lab necropsy in Sweden?
Yes, if you arrange it before the necropsy. Many labs dispose of remains themselves by incineration or digestion unless the submission form says the remains should be released to a crematory. Put the request in writing and confirm who collects from the lab.
Is cremation common in Sweden?
For people, about 84.69%[1] of deaths in Sweden end in cremation, which is a fair signal of how many crematories exist for small animals. It says little about large-animal capacity, so always ask a provider about weight limits directly.
Do institutions in Sweden use standing contracts for aftercare?
Many do. A standing arrangement agrees weight-band pricing, capacity limits, after-hours response and custody paperwork before a death happens. Institutions with frequent small losses and occasional large ones often keep two agreements: one local and one with large-animal capacity.
Is there a large-animal crematory in Sweden?
Often there's at least one equine-size provider, but not always close to you, and very few chambers anywhere can take an intact animal much over 1,500 lb. Send us the species and weight and we'll tell you what's realistically within reach, including labs and alternatives.
What should we do after a death in the heat?
Get the body into a cooler or refrigerated trailer within hours, especially for a large animal, which holds heat internally. In hot parts of Sweden, such as Sweden where summer highs average about °F, schedule lifts and transport for early morning.
