Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein
Arranging aftercare for exotic and wild animals in Kiel
Many owners in the Kiel area keep horses into old age, and the question of aftercare often arrives suddenly after a colic or a fall. Planning ahead helps: find out which providers serve your area, what collection involves, whether ashes can be returned and what the total price will be. Having that information before you need it means you can focus on your animal when the time comes.
Schleswig-Holstein is horse country, home of the Holsteiner breed, and the farmland around Kiel holds riding stables, dairy and arable farms and plenty of smaller holdings with sheep, goats and ponies. Within the city itself, large animals are rare. If a horse or farm animal dies on a holding near Kiel, tell a provider about access to the stable or field and whether a heavy vehicle can reach the animal.
Sanctuaries on the edge of Kiel, whether farm-animal, big cat, primate or equine, face the widest range of sizes. The same week can bring a chicken and a draft horse. Many have land for burial and use it where rules allow, but burial of a heavy animal needs equipment, setbacks from wells and water and, if the animal was euthanized, deep cover to protect scavenging wildlife. Cremation, even of a portion, is often chosen for residents the volunteers knew best.
With roughly 246,000 residents, Kiel is one of the Schleswig-Holstein communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Kiel are based about 53 miles away in Hamburg, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Hamburg (54 miles, a larger centre), Bremen (102 miles, a larger centre) and Hanover (136 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
76.0%[1]
In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and Embrace Pet Insurance.

What the human cremation rate in Germany does and doesn't tell you
Cremation is well established in Germany, where about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated. That broad acceptance helps when a zoo or sanctuary wants to explain its choices to donors and visitors, and it means individual cremation for smaller animals is easy to find. It doesn't settle disease cases, though: when avian influenza or another reportable condition is suspected, the state veterinarian decides the route, not local custom.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Germany figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Kiel tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather in Kiel sets the clock
Even without detailed local climate data, the safest assumption is that a large animal needs cold storage or transport the same day. Small animals can usually wait in a cooler or freezer for a scheduled pickup, once your vet confirms whether fresh samples are needed.

Price benchmarks for a quote in Kiel
The gap between collective and individual cremation is steep for mid-size animals. In France, a 20 kg animal is listed at €70 to €120 collective against €150 to €250 individual [4]. Rehab centers and wildlife hospitals in Germany can keep costs down by using collective cremation for routine cases and paying for individual cremation only where ashes are wanted.
The full price table by size is on our Schleswig-Holstein page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Who sets the rules for animal remains in Schleswig-Holstein
Rules for burying a large animal are usually stricter than for a household pet: deeper cover, bigger setbacks from wells and water and tighter deadlines. Animals euthanized with barbiturates carry extra conditions because of the risk to scavenging wildlife. Here's what Schleswig-Holstein generally allows.
In Germany, animal by-products law requires most dead animals to go through approved rendering (Tierkörperbeseitigung), with pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) handling individual cremation for smaller species. Home burial is allowed only with at least 50 cm of soil cover and outside water-protection areas [6]. For zoo species, check with the local veterinary office (Veterinäramt).
From enclosure to certificate, step by step
- Call the attending vet or pathologist first, and keep everyone away from the body until they've answered. It's their call whether a necropsy happens, which samples get taken and whether something reportable might be involved.
- Start the record now: animal ID, species, time of death, who found it and who moved it. Every later hand-off gets a signature.
- Get the body cold in a cooler or refrigerated trailer. Don't freeze it unless the vet says samples aren't needed.
- Give keepers a few minutes with the animal if they want it, before pathology takes over.
- Confirm the route in writing: lab disposal, individual cremation with ashes returned, digestion or burial. Put the ashes request on the lab submission form if it applies.
- Book transport and any heavy-lift equipment, with the route out of the habitat agreed in advance.
- File the certificate against the animal's ID and note any tissues or skeleton retained.
Honoring an animal in Kiel
Wet autumns and winters in Schleswig-Holstein leave pastures and farm tracks soft, and the flat, open landscape can be exposed to strong wind. Moving a horse, cow or pig in those conditions takes planning and suitable equipment. For commercial livestock there are established disposal channels; for a family horse, a pony or a pet goat, ask whether individual cremation with ashes returned is available.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Kiel?
The closest communities we cover are Hamburg (about 54 miles), Bremen (about 102 miles) and Hanover (about 136 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Kiel too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Kiel actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Hamburg, about 53 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Kiel and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Kiel follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can we be present for the cremation?
Some providers allow keepers or staff to attend the start of a cremation, and for a long-term resident it can mean a lot. It usually needs booking ahead and may cost more. Large-animal providers near Kiel vary widely in what they allow, so ask on the first call rather than assuming.
How do you cremate an animal as large as a giraffe or elephant?
Rarely intact. Very few chambers can take an animal much over 1,500 lb, so large cases are usually sectioned after necropsy and cremated in several loads, sent to a lab digester, rendered or buried on grounds where the law allows. If ashes matter, ask how every load will be tracked and combined, and get that promise in writing.
Can several small animals be cremated together and still be tracked?
Yes, as long as you log them individually before they go. Communal cremation means the ashes are mixed and not returned, but your records can still list every animal by intake number, species, date and route. Ask the provider for a manifest that matches your list, and flag any animal that needs individual cremation so it's kept apart.
