Aftercare for zoo, sanctuary and rehab animals in Pamplona

Pamplona, Navarre

The local picture for institutions and keepers in Pamplona

Navarre is a region with a strong farming tradition, from sheep and cattle in the Pyrenean valleys to crops in the Ribera in the south, and horses are still part of rural life. Around Pamplona, many people keep a few animals on small plots or farms. After a large animal dies, give the location, access road and whether a vehicle with lifting equipment can reach it, since many rural properties sit on narrow tracks.

Navarre's mountain and valley landscape brings its own challenges. Steep tracks in the Pyrenees, snow in winter and summer heat all affect how quickly a large animal can be collected. If you keep an older horse or livestock as pets, it's worth asking in advance what would be involved. That way, if the time comes during a winter storm or at the height of summer, you already know your options.

Necropsy access from Pamplona usually means a state or university diagnostic lab, which may be some distance away. Before you need it, find out which lab serves your area, whether they accept intact large animals or only samples, how they want submissions packed and chilled and whether they'll release remains to a crematory afterwards. If the answer to that last question is no, and ashes matter to your team, you may need a local vet to take samples and send the body directly to cremation.

About 201,000 people live in Pamplona. Some of the providers who serve Pamplona are based about 72 miles away in Bilbao, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

The closest communities we cover are San Sebastian (39 miles), Bilbao (72 miles) and Zaragoza (89 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Pamplona too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

50.11%[1]

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local attitudes to cremation and memorials

About 50.11%[1] of people who die in Spain are cremated, so cremation is familiar without being universal. For public-facing institutions, that means a memorial for a well-known animal can take many forms, from a plaque over buried remains to a planting with a portion of ashes. Ask your keepers and your visitors what feels right; local custom gives you room either way.

The Spain percentage above is from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Pamplona, not as a count of pets.

Planning around Pamplona's climate

Even without detailed local climate data, the safest assumption is that a large animal needs cold storage or transport the same day. Small animals can usually wait in a cooler or freezer for a scheduled pickup, once your vet confirms whether fresh samples are needed.

How providers near Pamplona price large and exotic animals

Prices in Spain follow the same logic as elsewhere: weight, individual or collective cremation, and collection. In France, individual cremation of a 50 kg animal is listed at €300 to €400 [4], a reasonable guide for a mid-size zoo mammal. Ask for a written quote in local currency.

We keep the detailed Navarre price table on one page so it stays current: see Navarre prices.

Who sets the rules for animal remains in Navarre

Rules for burying a large animal are usually stricter than for a household pet: deeper cover, bigger setbacks from wells and water and tighter deadlines. Animals euthanized with barbiturates carry extra conditions because of the risk to scavenging wildlife. Here's what Navarre generally allows.

In Spain, larger dead animals are usually collected under animal by-products rules, and pet crematoria handle smaller species with individual or collective cremation. Regional authorities set some rules, so ask the local veterinary service about zoo or wildlife species. Summer heat in much of Spain makes cold storage and prompt collection especially important.

From enclosure to certificate, step by step

  1. Call the attending vet or pathologist first, and keep everyone away from the body until they've answered. It's their call whether a necropsy happens, which samples get taken and whether something reportable might be involved.
  2. Start the record now: animal ID, species, time of death, who found it and who moved it. Every later hand-off gets a signature.
  3. Get the body cold using a cooler or a refrigerated trailer. Hold off on freezing until the vet confirms no samples are wanted.
  4. Give keepers a few minutes with the animal if they want it, before pathology takes over.
  5. Confirm the route in writing: lab disposal, individual cremation with ashes returned, digestion or burial. Put the ashes request on the lab submission form if it applies.
  6. Book transport and any heavy-lift equipment, with the route out of the habitat agreed in advance.
  7. File the certificate under the animal's ID, and record whether any tissues or the skeleton were kept.

After the paperwork: remembering them

In Spain, farm animals that die are normally collected through the regulated system for animal by-products, which is typically the default for livestock. A horse, donkey or goat kept as a companion is a different situation, and some owners in Navarre prefer individual cremation. Tell us which applies, since options for large-animal cremation are limited and may involve transport outside the Pamplona area.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Pamplona actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Bilbao, about 72 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Pamplona and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Pamplona?

The closest communities we cover are San Sebastian (about 39 miles), Bilbao (about 72 miles) and Zaragoza (about 89 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Pamplona too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Why does the Pamplona page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a zoo animal be cremated after a necropsy?

Yes, and it's common. The remains may be incomplete because tissues are kept for histology, and some institutions retain the skeleton or skin for collections. Tell the lab before the necropsy that you want ashes returned, and put it on the submission form, so the remains are released to a crematory rather than disposed of at the lab.

How do you cremate an animal as large as a giraffe or elephant?

Rarely intact. Very few chambers can take an animal much over 1,500 lb, so large cases are usually sectioned after necropsy and cremated in several loads, sent to a lab digester, rendered or buried on grounds where the law allows. If ashes matter, ask how every load will be tracked and combined, and get that promise in writing.

Can a private exotic keeper in Pamplona use a regular pet crematory?

Usually, yes, for animals that fit the chamber: parrots, reptiles, small primates where legal and most mid-size mammals. Ask for individual cremation if you want ashes back and a certificate naming the species. For very heavy animals, or if you hold a permit for the species, check capacity and any reporting conditions first.
